Y también he subido muchos dibujos nuevos a isaacart.com

I haven't written here for so long, which doesn't meant that I haven't been writing. I've doing many articles for elmundo.es (You can see links to my articles in my other blog, phototao.com).
And I've written (and directed) a play that has left me quite impressed. The kids at OAS Middle School acted it yesterday and they moved me deeply. It was so good that I cannot begin to believe that I wrote and directed it. Now the plan is to bring The Last Play on Earth to a large theater downtown.
In the meantime, I have not drawn much, but I did made the paper hats for the play. Soon I will post photos. I had tried to give them to a shipping supplies store, but they didn't take them and so they sat, gathering dust. Little did I know that they were waiting to be reborn.

This head was originally all pink. But the jaw wasn't quite right as it was too receeded. Ed Inks said that it would be impossible for that head to chew anything with that jaw. I was determine to fix the proportions, but I had ran out of pink. So I gave the head a beard. And just to make sure, teeth (also made of packing material), so that it could chew just about anything.

The giant head is a favorite among kids. I love that they enjoy it. And speaking of kids, I gave a couple of conceptual art lectures at Open Alternative School's 6-8th grade class. The kids were enthralled. The teacher said that he hadn't seen the kids so interested and focused in a long time. Thank you Ed for your help in making this possible.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://isaachh.blogspot.com/2009/06/untitled-styrofoam-reborn.html' title='Untitled. Rather than trying to get the most spectacular shot of a house on fire, I documented both the burnt homes and the saved homes in a straight-forward manner. The first is that back in March we had a successful photo exhibit and the Difference Makers Photo Project was born, as well as the PhotoDifference website. The goal is to shift the conversation from TAKING photos to GIVING through photos. Above is a photo of the show.

New work

I've been working on new material... It needs some more "beef", or should I say sheep, on certain parts of the body. And it will receive some kind of covering; at this point I'm leaning towards gold leaf. Many people are reacting to this piece as an image of suffering. I want to celebrate it, with gold. And at the same time, bring reference to art becoming an object of luxurious adoration, very much like the golden sheep, I mean calf, adored by the Israelites. It turns out that Damien Hirst has already done a Golden Calf. That's perfect, since this piece started as a reference to Rauschenberg, Hirst and the evolution of the art market. I almost gave up on the project after the first try. But then Ashley was kind enough to plaster me again. I really feel for Antony Gormley and his wife, who gets to plaster him (watch a video of Gormley being plastered here). Attaching all the molds together and giving shape to this sculpture is proving pretty painful for my muscles.

I want to pay homage to the sheep that Robert Rauschenberg used in his Monogram. Originally, I was thinking about cutting the sheep, I mean myself, in half, stealing from Damien Hirst and his treatment of animals. I liked the sheep connection between Rauschenberg and Hirst, artist of pieces like Away From the Flock. Even though Damien has declared that he is not interested in working with human bodies, I wanted to put myself in the postion of the sheep, who suffered the Passion of Rauschenberg and The Wrath of God, er... Hirst. The idea was Damien was cutting me in half and Robert was holding me together thanks to the tire.
At the end, I couldn't cut my own self in half. I'll just have to wait for Damien to do it.

Below is the work in progress, with a tire that I found on the sidewalk and carried home on the handlebars of my bicycle (pretty funny to see). Since I used a found object, I had to think of Marcel Duchamp, who is present in the title, after In Advance of a Broken Arm.
I still don't know how the whole thing will end, as far as head position, location and texture/color. Would I dare to cover it in wax and bring Kiki Smith to the party? After all, she's definitely present in my work, and she has also worked with a goat in Tied to Nature. And since I brought up Kiki, I will say that I am interested in the sexual connotations of this pose and our different standards for men than women. I have been making self-portraits in a fetal position for many years. Last year I chose to do a female version. When the figure was my own, it translated as agony, but when it was a woman, the whole thing turned sexual. I hate it. Nevertheless, some of my male friends love it.

This time, I wanted to know how far I could go to make this pose agonizing but very close to sexual, blurring the lines between the two. Of course, if I (the figure) was a woman, this sculpture would definitely be about sex, and maybe even about rape. I still have to work on giving it color, but I need to find grey and green paper bags, as that's the only material allowed for the assignment.

Tree Eats Chair

In honor of Robert Rauschenberg, I decided to incorporate a chair, an old chair. But have they registered the name Yip or Yipao (a loaded Yip, as in Yip cargao)? That's how they're called in Colombia, where the first generation Jeep, the Willys, is engraved in the Andean culture to the point that Yipao is a unit of measure, such as a Yipao of bananas (40-45 bunches), of yucca, coffee or oranges. The Yipaos are also hired for moving (coroteo) or for public transportation.

To celebrate the love for the Yipao, Armenia started a parade 20 years ago. Almost 100 vehicles participated in this year's desfile and I was there to experience it, courtesy of Chrysler. The loaded chariots are even more impressive when you realize that they are not just for show, but part of the daily lives of the people in the coffee growing region of Quindío. Our trip included driving an old Wyllis, being part of the parade in a new Wrangler Unlimited and having conversations with multiple Willys' fans, including Yesid Quintero, who can rebuild missing body parts with a sheet of metal and a hammer.

More photos on MercuryPress.com

Saint Maritza

The Cathedral of Santa Maritza (formerly Chichen Itza) is well under way, as you can see in the progress photos. We met many people affected by the new closing of the border. In San Ysidro, California, there's a park where divided families can meet, kiss, cry and talk, with a fence in between, on weekends. The second wall will end the only real contact between these families. Pictured above with his son is Mario Chavez, a legal US resident who cannot go into Mexico because of limitations in his visa. And Norma Torres (pictured below with her mother and grandmother), a US resident who works two jobs in California and is not allowed to leave the country until her citizenship goes through. I was fascinated by the expression of such solitude in Piazza (1948-49), in which four men walk near a woman, together but alone.

I often have thought of Giacometti’s Piazza when I see people talking on their mobile phone, whether with a hands free device or holding the phone to their ear. As a photographer, I have tried to capture it first in film and later in pixels.

Our first assignment for the Sculpture I class was to create a sculpture made of multiples, for which we would make a mold out of plaster.

After running through many ideas, Giacometti came out of my subconscious. Why not combine my fascination with solitude in a crowd and my dependence to the mobile phone? I am annoyed by people who talk on their mobile phone loudly in public, or while driving. But I have too fallen victim to the phone and ignored my surroundings, not realizing that I may be bothering others.
For this piece I was inspired as well by Michelangelo Buonarroti’s David (1504). Today, David’s sling is a mobile phone. It was only appropriate to appropriate the woman figure in Giacometti’s Piazza also from the Renaissance, this time from a painting: Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus (1482–1486).

I wanted the black figures to be naked, lacking any sense of personal expression, the mobile phone providing their identity. I was influenced somehow by Anthony Gromley’s Field for the British Isles (1994): 40,000 men lacking identity; I wonder what it would sound like if all those figures were speaking on a cell phone. I later discovered the full-size black naked figures of Gromley. I would like to repeat this sculpture full-size, where the viewer can walk around and interact, or try to interact, with the busy men. It would be an evolution of Magdalena Abakanowicz’s Agora sculpture (2006) of 106 headless men wondering aimlessly in Chicago.

Sixty years after Giacometti’s Piazza, it was time to revisit it. Of course, the world is more crowded now, so it wouldn’t do with just five figures. And the public spaces, like stadiums, hospitals and even museums have fallen to corporate sponsorship. So we have the Staples Center, where the Lakers play, the Mattel Children Hospital at UCLA, and the BP Grand Entrance, the plaza in front of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
It is appropriate then than the Piazza is now the Plaza, the American name (borrowed from Spanish) for their public spaces and, at times, shopping malls, as La Cumbre Plaza in Santa Barbara, or La Plaza de La Paz in Laguna Niguel, home to 45 restaurants and a Home Depot; the Square of Peace alright. So our public square is fond of corporate sponsorship, and what better sponsor than Verizon, thus Verizon Plaza.

The Verizon Plaza uses rhythmic repetition, with similar figures, cast from the same mold, plus the master figure from which rib the other figures were born, plus an original virgin/goddess-figure, the Venus, ignored by David and company. She’s not talking on the phone; she prefers texting.

Everybody is talking. Nobody’s listening. The open mouths were a happy accident waiting to happen. I had placed a piece of clay in the mold to cover an imperfection in the rear end. When I poured the wax, the clay moved to the head. As I removed the clay with a blade, the figure opened his mouth. Alas, all of them started talking at once.

Cathedral of St. Chichen Itza

The second part of our third assignment for Ed Ink's 3D Design class is to create a plaster architectural sculpture, after producing five to ten maquettes, combining two or three architectural styles. The result will be some kind of abstraction. As inspiration we looked at photos of models by James Turrell and Isamu Noguchi. Ah, the power of photography!

I have always been attracted to Mayan culture. Being from Spain, and having seen mosques and temples turned into churches, I wonder what it would have been like if the Spaniards would have converted the main pyramid at Chichen Itzá, Yucatán, México, into a Cathedral.

I made two different maquette versions; I don't know yet how the final plaster model will look like. Today I built a cardboard box with the approximate shape, and poured plaster into it (after sealing the cracks with hot glue and duct tape).

When I return from my photo expeditions, I will carve the plaster. First I will travel along the US/Mexico border, where I will be working alongside Carlos Fresneda on a number of stories for El Mundo newspaper in Spain. Then I will go to Armenia and Bogotá, Colombia, for a travel story including a festival of Jeep Willys, invited by Chrysler. Thus, I received a handicap and started a few feet behind everybody, and still managed to finish second.

I explored with the idea of making arches of different depth to form the sphere, all surrounding a smaller sphere inside. I like the different cross patterns. We weren't allowed to use paint, only glue and cardboard. I used the color in an air conditioner box to create some contrast. Above, you can see the ball during construction, and completed. Below is the start of the first qualifying race, when we figured out that my ball needed a handicap.

3D Design with Ed Inks

I signed up for Beginning Sculpture, a class at Santa Barbara City College by artist Ed Inks. I enjoyed his teaching style so much that I decided to enroll in 3D Design as well. My friend David Cooper wanted to see my creations, thus this blog.

The first assignment was to make a shoe out of wire; line defines volume. I turned my 3D design into a painting, and I added Renaissance perspective by including a second shoe "in the distance", as it's going into the X-Ray machine at the airport. The idea is a bit abstract still, so it may require some extra work. The working title: X-Ray Shoes: Illusion of Security.
Please comment.

To David Cooper

Last summer I had the pleasure of meeting David Cooper and Michelle Zapata, photo editors for Siempre Mujer and Ser Padres, respectively. We had a very nice pow wow, or portfolio review, even though it was all about me, me, me, me. Sorry Michelle and David.

After a pleasant time looking at pictures, David walked me to the elevator and I finally got out of my shell, and I asked about what he loved to do. David gave me his blog address. It turns out David is a very accomplished illustrator, and he keeps a very exciting blog about his creative process. He's inspired me to do the same.

And although my job at this time is primarily being a photographer, I will share here about all my creative smoothies, from play writing, to sculpture, painting, drawing and photography.
